How ADHD shows up in teenagers — and what parents often misread

Teen ADHD doesn't always look like a hyper little kid. In adolescents, it often looks like laziness, defiance, emotional volatility, or poor choices. If several of these are consistent patterns — not occasional lapses — it's worth a conversation.

Chronic difficulty starting tasks — even ones they want to do
Losing track of assignments, deadlines, and belongings constantly
Hyperfocus on interesting things, then can't shift off them
Emotional reactions that seem way out of proportion
Saying things without thinking, acting without considering consequences
Struggles with time management — always late, always out of time
Poor working memory — forgets instructions before acting on them
Homework takes 3× longer than it should, or never gets done
Sleep difficulties — can't wind down, racing thoughts at night
Low frustration tolerance — gives up quickly when things get hard
Persistent shame or self-criticism despite real effort
Difficulty reading social cues or interrupting conversations

ADHD counseling topics at Renew

We work with the full ADHD picture — not just attention. That means executive function, emotional regulation, self-concept, and family dynamics.

Executive Function Skills

Task initiation, planning, time management, working memory, organization — the skills ADHD makes hard. We teach specific, practical strategies rather than generic advice.

Emotional Regulation

ADHD creates intense emotions that feel hard to control. We help teenagers understand the emotional component of ADHD and build tools to respond rather than react.

ADHD in Teen Girls

Girls with ADHD often present with inattentive symptoms — daydreaming, forgetfulness, overwhelm — that go undiagnosed for years. We specialize in recognizing and addressing this presentation.

ADHD + Anxiety or Depression

Half of teens with ADHD also have anxiety or depression. These conditions interact and need to be addressed together — not treated in isolation.

Self-Esteem & Identity

Years of being told to "try harder" creates shame and a broken self-concept. We help teenagers understand their brain and separate ADHD from their character and worth.

Parent Coaching for ADHD Families

Parenting a teenager with ADHD is genuinely hard. We offer parent coaching to help families stop the battles and build communication strategies that work with their teenager's brain.

What parents ask about teen ADHD counseling

This is one of the most common things we hear, and it doesn't close the door. Our counselors are experienced with teenagers who are resistant or skeptical, and when a teen truly won't engage, we can start with you — parent coaching gives you tools and language that often shift the dynamic at home enough that the teen becomes willing. Call us and we'll talk through the best starting point.
Sessions at Renew range from $45–$115 depending on your counselor's credential level: $45 with a Master's-level counselor, $75 with an LPC-Associate, and $100 with a fully licensed counselor (LPC or LPC-S). Renew is self-pay — we provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement and accept HSA/FSA cards. ADHD screening and assessment with Taylor Jirik, LPC-Associate, is priced separately: $100 clinical intake, $150 per 90-minute testing session (most people need one), and $100 for the results and report review — typically about $350 total, conducted under LPC-S supervision. See our Fees page for the full rate card.
Testing is customized by age and the clinical interview. Every assessment includes the Conners Continuous Performance Test (CPT-3), a computerized attention measure; the KBIT-2, a brief cognitive screen; and either the BASC-3 or the MPQ depending on age. Additional standardized scales, including the NICHQ Vanderbilt, the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), and mood and OCD screeners, are used to check for conditions that can look like ADHD or occur alongside it. Assessments are conducted by Taylor Jirik, LPC-Associate, under LPC-S supervision, with a written report and a results review appointment.
Yes — and often significantly. Medication addresses the neurological component of ADHD, but it doesn't teach executive function skills, help with emotional regulation, or address the self-esteem damage from years of struggling. Counseling provides what medication can't: practical strategies, emotional processing, and skills your teenager carries forward independently.
Absolutely. ADHD presents very differently depending on subtype, gender, age, and co-occurring conditions. Girls especially are frequently under-diagnosed because their ADHD tends to be inattentive — showing up as daydreaming, forgetfulness, and overwhelm rather than disruptive behavior. If something feels off but the classic descriptions don't fit, trust your instinct and call us.
Tutoring addresses content. ADHD counseling addresses the underlying challenges that make learning hard: time blindness, task initiation, emotional dysregulation, low frustration tolerance, and self-concept. We also work with the anxiety and depression that frequently accompany ADHD in teenagers.
Yes — and this is often where the biggest gains happen. Parent coaching at Renew helps parents understand how ADHD works, stop unintentionally reinforcing ADHD patterns, and build communication strategies that work with their teenager's brain, not against it.
If your teenager needs to miss school for an appointment, we can provide a school note for their records. We also offer evening and Saturday appointments for families who prefer to keep school days uninterrupted.
Yes. Taylor Jirik on our team offers ADHD testing. Testing can provide a formal evaluation that helps confirm whether ADHD is present, identify the specific presentation, and support school accommodations or treatment planning. Call us at (903) 386-3824 to ask about scheduling a testing appointment.
