When in doubt, go. No doctor has ever faulted a parent for bringing a child in too early.

Stay with them — presence matters more than the right words. Lock up or remove medications, firearms, and anything else that could cause harm. Listen without arguing about whether their feelings make sense. And do not promise to keep it a secret; promise to help instead.
