"Children don't always have words for what they're carrying. Play is the universal language they use to express what is happening inside them. A child who cannot explain what's wrong will still show me — in what she builds, what she reaches for, and what she avoids. My work is to watch, to listen, and to understand. When a child feels understood at play, the healing has already started."
— Kimberly Reagan, LPC-S
About Kimberly

Why parents of young children choose Kimberly for play therapy

I have been working in children's mental health since 2009, and I am still excited about it. That matters more than people realize. Nearly two decades in, I still believe that every child who comes into my office has something to tell me. My job is to create the right space to hear it.

I specialize in play therapy because play is the universal language children use to express what is happening inside them. Kids don't sit across from an adult and describe their anxiety. They show you through how they move, what they build, which things they reach for, and what they avoid. I am trained to read all of it. For parents, that means you can bring in a 3-year-old who has never had words for what they are going through, and I will find a way in.

Life can feel overwhelming for children and adults alike. As a parent, you might feel unsure how to best support your child. I work to create a safe, nurturing space where children can express themselves freely and begin to heal. My approach is warm and personal. I want every client to feel heard before the real work begins.

I hold a Master of Education in Counseling from the University of North Texas and have been working in children's mental health in East Texas since 2009. As an LPC-Supervisor, I also provide clinical oversight to associate counselors at Renew. I am dedicated to comprehensive supervision, so my associates can give every client the best care possible.

How Kimberly Works

Kimberly's approach

I draw from several evidence-based approaches and adapt my tools to each client. For children, I practice Person-Centered Play Therapy, which meets kids exactly where they are developmentally. For older clients working through trauma, I use Trauma-Focused CBT and Cognitive Processing Therapy. I also bring in Motivational Interviewing for adolescents and adults who are navigating change and not quite sure where to start.

I am not rigid about method. What I am consistent about is creating a space where clients feel safe before any real work begins. For children, that matters enormously. For teens and adults, it matters just as much.

My first session is about getting to know you and your child, not jumping straight into treatment. I want to understand what brought you in, how your child has been experiencing the world, and what a good outcome looks like for your family.

Play therapy uses play — a child's natural language — to help children process emotions, trauma, and behavioral challenges. Rather than requiring young clients to articulate complex feelings verbally, play therapy allows them to express and work through experiences in a developmentally appropriate way. It's specifically designed for younger children and is often the most effective approach for ages 3–8.
Yes. Kimberly works with children starting at age 3. Play therapy is designed for young children — it's often the most effective approach precisely because it doesn't require verbal processing that young children aren't developmentally ready for.
