How anxiety shows up in teenagers — and what parents notice first

Teen anxiety doesn't always look like worry. It can look like attitude, avoidance, or anger. Here's what parents see.

Refuses to go to school or fakes illness
Constant "what if" worrying about small things
Stomach aches or headaches — no medical cause
Avoids social situations they used to enjoy
Needs repeated reassurance that things are OK
Trouble sleeping or waking at night
Irritable, on edge, or easily startled
Difficulty concentrating at school despite effort
Panic attacks or sudden episodes of intense fear
Refuses to try anything new or uncertain
Excessive perfectionism — terrified of mistakes
Anger outbursts when anxiety builds up

Types of teen anxiety we treat at Renew

Anxiety takes different forms. Our counselors identify what's driving your teenager's specific struggles and build a focused treatment plan.

Generalized Anxiety (GAD)

Persistent, wide-ranging worry about school, family, the future, friendships — that doesn't have an off switch even when everything is fine.

Social Anxiety

Intense fear of embarrassment, judgment, or humiliation in social situations. Can lead to avoidance of school, lunch, sports, and friendships.

Panic Attacks

Sudden episodes of intense physical fear — racing heart, trouble breathing, feeling of doom. Often deeply frightening and misunderstood by the teenager and their family.

School Avoidance & Refusal

Anxiety that manifests as persistent inability or refusal to attend school. Often rooted in social anxiety, performance fears, or past negative experiences.

Separation Anxiety

Disproportionate fear of being away from parents or home. More common in preteens but can persist into adolescence when underlying anxiety is not addressed.

Perfectionism & Performance Anxiety

Excessive self-criticism, fear of failure, and emotional shutdown when things don't go perfectly. Especially common in academically high-achieving teenagers.

How getting help works at Renew

1

Free Fit Call

(903) 386-3824 — call and tell us what you're seeing. We listen, answer your questions, and help you figure out whether your teenager needs anxiety counseling or something else.

2

We Match Your Teen

We connect your teenager with the counselor whose style, specialty, and schedule best fits their situation. The right match matters — especially with teenagers who are resistant.

3

First Session — No Pressure

The first session is about building trust. No agenda, no fixing, no pressure to share more than they're ready for. Most teens are more open than parents expect by session two.

4

Ongoing Sessions + Parent Support

We work with your teen using evidence-based approaches like CBT. Parent check-ins are included. Parent coaching is available alongside your teenager's individual sessions.

Questions parents ask about teen anxiety counseling

This is the most common situation we work with. A free Fit Call gives you a professional perspective on what you're observing — even if your teenager won't come in yet. For teenagers who are resistant, the first session is built around trust, not problem-solving. Most teenagers open up far more than their parents expected.
Evidence-based anxiety treatment — primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — teaches teenagers to identify the thought patterns that fuel anxiety, challenge them, and respond differently. It's skills-based, not just processing. Your teenager walks out of sessions with tools they can actually use.
Renew is self-pay only. We provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement if your policy covers it — most don't, so check with your provider first. HSA and FSA cards accepted. Sessions range from $45–$115.
If a daytime appointment is needed, we can provide a school note so your teenager is excused for the absence. We also have evening and Saturday hours available for families who prefer those times — Mon–Fri 8am–7pm and Sat 8am–4pm.
Yes — and this is one of the most common presentations we see. Anxiety and depression frequently co-occur in teenagers. Our counselors are trained to address both simultaneously and build a treatment plan that accounts for the full picture.

Your teenager doesn't have to keep living like this.

The free 15-minute Fit Call is no-pressure, no-commitment. A real conversation about what you're seeing and whether Renew is the right fit.
