Works
even when your teenager refuses counseling — you change your approach, the dynamic shifts

You've read the books. You've tried the advice. Nothing is working.

You love your child. You're doing everything right on paper. And yet — every conversation ends in a fight, or a door slamming, or your teenager staring at their phone while you talk.

You don't need to be told to "listen more." You need tools that actually work with the specific child who lives in your house. Parent coaching is practical. We work on your actual conversations, your actual patterns, your actual family.

Your teen refuses to go to counseling

When your teenager won't engage, parent coaching is often the best starting point. You change your approach at home. The dynamic shifts. Sometimes that's enough — sometimes it opens the door to your teenager eventually coming in.

Individual therapy isn't enough on its own

Your child sees their counselor once a week. But they come home to the same patterns. Parent coaching helps you understand what their counselor is working on and how to reinforce it at home — without overstepping.

You need strategies specific to your child

Generic parenting advice doesn't account for your child's personality, your home dynamic, or the specific patterns you're stuck in. Coaching is tailored to your situation — not a template.

What parent coaching gives you

Concrete tools, not general advice. You leave each session with something specific to try.

✓How to invite your child into counseling without triggering resistance
✓How to hold firm on non-negotiables without creating all-out war
✓How to stay connected emotionally, whether your child is pulling away or just having a hard time
✓How to de-escalate before a conversation goes sideways
✓When to hold the line vs. when to let something go
✓How to talk about mental health with a child who doesn't think they need help
✓How to align with your co-parent so your child isn't navigating inconsistency

How parent coaching works

1

Free 15-Minute Fit Call

Tell us what's been going on. We'll ask questions and help you think through whether parent coaching, family counseling, or some combination is the right fit for your situation — and which counselor fits your child's age.

2

Initial coaching session

You and your counselor build a clear picture of the dynamic at home — what's been tried, what's working, what isn't — and set the direction for coaching.

3

Ongoing sessions

Sessions are weekly or every other week. Your counselor gives you something concrete to try. You come back and report what happened — and adjust from there. No vague advice.

4

When you're ready to wrap up

Coaching ends when you feel equipped — not on a fixed schedule. Many parents return for a check-in when something new comes up.

Questions parents ask first

Yes — and this is exactly the situation parent coaching was designed for. When a teenager won't engage, you start without them. You shift your approach at home. The environment they're responding to changes, and their behavior often changes with it. Parent coaching is frequently the bridge that eventually gets a resistant teenager into the counseling office.
Renew is self-pay only. Sessions range from $50–$125. We provide superbills so you can seek out-of-network reimbursement if your policy covers it — most do not, so check with your provider first. HSA and FSA cards are accepted.
Family counseling brings the whole family into the room together. Parent coaching is just you, working with a counselor to develop your own skills and strategy. Both are valuable — many families do both. We'll help you figure out what fits your situation on the Fit Call.
